The issues we are facing are bigger than any one development. The fate of our neighborhoods is at stake.
Due to Buckman's proximity to downtown, the lack of design review protections and the high rate of absentee ownership,
Buckman is extremely vulnerable to inappropriate development.
We consider inappropriate development to be development which does not support family life in the inner city & the public school system, which does not involve neighborhood input, and which does not give back to the neighborhood. With the city development bureau apparently on the side of the developers, neighborhoods no longer have a say in alterations to the physical form they take. Portland has a tradition of tremendous neighborhood involvement in city governance, but in this one area, the neighborhoods have limited power.
